Observing the Concept Attainment Model at Work
Teaching is essentially modelling the models. Today we got an opportunity to observe the demonstration class of our senior teacher trainee Ms. Shijin Shaji. The lesson was organized in the Concept Attainment Model. She engaged the 9th standard students of NSS Girls High School Pandalam with the concept "adjectives". As she had already introduced "adjectives" in the previous class, she distributed the copies of a story among the students and asked them to circle the adjectives.

When the students finished the activity, the teacher trainee picked out three adjectives "clever", "cleverer" and "cleverest" to make them familiar with the concepts of positive, comparative and superlative degrees of comparison.

Then, she made the students take part in an interesting activity modelling on the recent social media trend "What's in my bag?". After dividing the students into four groups named Clever, Black, Cute and Loud respectively, one member from each group was asked to come forward and feel the things in the paper bags placed on the table. After identifying its characteristic from touch, they were asked to pick out the suitable adjective from the chart provided, and make three sentences each using the positive, comparative and superlative forms of it. The learners actively participated in the task and presented the sentences they created. Ms. Shijin also gave them a worksheet out of which they need to identify the adjectives and their corresponding forms, as their homework.
